Teaching Chinese (Mandarin) Language

When Lil' C was born, I always wanted to teach her Chinese and I did...... at least for the first few months of her life. Then when she started to show interest in books around 9 month, all my Chinese lessons went out the door. : ( She loves books. Since we can borrow as many books as we want from the libraries here, we would go through at least 10 books a day. My Chinese is very rusty and definitely not good enough to translate all those books to Chinese. I couldn't get hold of any Chinese books at all. It was very hard keeping her interested in a language with no books, flashcards and especially one which no one else speaks. So I kinda abandoned her Chinese lesson.

But now I think it's a good idea to get started again for a couple of reasons. The main reason is that I want her to be able to communicate with her grandparents. With the inlaws impending visit sometime next yr, I want them to be able to enjoy their time together & not be marred by the inability to communicate since the inlaws don't speak English.

Another reason is that she's at a point where she's absorbing everything. Occasionally I still teach her a few Chinese words & I find her picking them up much faster than before. Now that we've moved to the Pacific Northwest, there's so much more resources available too. Even Chinese schools!!

So...... wish me luck everyone! : ) Hopefully the lessons will go well. Anyone knows of a good Chinese learning website? :P

Craft Time: Ice Cream

Which kid does not like to eat ice-cream? I know mine is crazy about it. She loves this craft. All you need for this craft are

  • a triangle for the cone
  • some circles for the different flavors
  • some smaller red circles for cherries
  • shredded bits of crepe paper for sprinkles

Then let them assemble it with as many scoops of ice-cream as they like : )

Finish it off with some cherries & sprinkles! Better than Haagen-Dazs, eh??? :p

What to feed a toddler?

Lil' C is a little picky about food. Of course, when it's snack time, she eats a lot but when it comes to mealtime, she doesn't really eat much, a fact that kinda bugs me. She hasn't gain weight in a long time. So I am always trying to figure out what kind of food to make for her so that she will eat more.

I also find that if I present food in an attractive way, she will also eat more. I'm not a very creative person. So it's been a challenge for me *sigh*

Here's my attempt at making a simple egg sandwich more attractive. :p Served together with carrot sticks & dip & cheese.

Verdict: she loves it 'cos of the 2 cute duckies or are they chicks?? Not quite sure but as long as she eats them, it doesn't matter! : -) I guess that means I better stock up on cute cookie cutters!!

So what do u mommies feed your toddler? Can share-share ar?? : )

My new blog!!

I've gone a little blog-crazy and created another blog. Initially, I thought I wanted to replace this blog but blur-blur me couldn't figure out how to import my data over to the new blog, so I decided to keep this one too. (I did finally figure out how to do it.Duh!!)

Anway, this blog will be kept for all toddler-related stuff. I'm thinking of doing some homeschooling with her soon. So will try to include it into this blog. Will try to keep sponsored posts to a minimum here. Everything else will be in my new chapbalang (mishmash) blog.

If you are interested, do drop by my new home at Just My Rambling. It's still under renovation so please pardon the dust, ok : p Will be working on my links over there. Let me know if you want to be included there. Thanks! : )

She turns 32 months today.....

My baby is 32 months today........ In another 4 months, she will be 3. She is really growing up too fast for my liking *sigh*

Compared to her 30 mth milestones, these 2 months brought more major milestones....

  1. She's finally potty-trained during the day. Still gotta work on the night potty-training.

  2. She's starting to conquer her fear of heights. She has never been a climber or jumper. But these 2 mths she's starting to do that.

  3. She has taken over my computer!!! *boohoo* She's started to play computer games all by herself. Even typed in her own name in one of the games!

  4. Getting more dramatic every day. Lately whenever she gets scolded, she will run & sit at the steps & starts singing her sad song! Yes, she has a sad song. It's from Barney. Can't remember the exact lyrics. Will have to try to videotape her doing it one day.

  5. Her learning abilities has shown the greatest improvement.
  • She has started to read on her own. When she first started doing that, I wondered whether she was really reading or it was just part of her memory since she's got most of her books memorized already. So I got her some new books which we've never read b4 & tested her & true enough, she was able to read about 50% of the book with no help and it's getting better each day. Woohoo...... I have been waiting for this day for a long time!! I love reading to my gal but by the time I get to the 10th book of the day, it gets exhausting. At least now I dun have to read so much to her anymore : )

  • Loves to do rhyming words & opposites

  • Starting to grasp the concept of simple math - addition & subtraction

  • Can count to 100 - remember my bean game?? That really did helped her 'cos we would always count to 100 during the clean up.

  • Starting to write

At this age, she's a total sponge. Whatever I teach her, she absorbs. It scares me sometimes 'cos I start to wonder whether I'm teaching her enough. I've never officially homeschool her. The closest that I've come to an official lesson is doing some workbooks that I get from Costco (Tesco-equivalent). Even that is done at her request. Hmmm..... Maybe it's about time to make some decisions about homeschooling, something which has been on my mind for a while now.

After a couple of accidents and lots of running to the bathroom, I think *cross my fingers* we are finally potty-trained! Why only potty-train her at 31 mths? 'cos I'm a very lazy mommy!!! : P

Actually, I've had her poopy-trained at 18 mths. That was very easy & took only 2 days. The secret: books!! Lil' C loves to read so I bribe her into the toilet with books & she would sit on the toilet for a long time with a whole stack of books.

But I have been dragging my feet on pee-pee training simply because I hate going to public toilets!! During my growing up years, I travel a lot between Singapore & Malaysia on the night bus & the places that the buses used to stop for toilet stops leave much to be desired. That's why from then on, I have public toilet phobia, especially in unknown places. Since Lil' C & I go out a lot to storytimes or other activites, it was much easier for me to change her diaper than to bring her to the public toilet every couple of hours.

So why am I finally doing it? It's because I want to enrol her in a once-a-week Chinese playschool in Sep and their requirement is ALL CHILDREN MUST BE POTTY-TRAINED. *sigh* No choice lor! Have to get over my phobia and do the inevitable.........

Fun way to learn colors

FUN is probably one of the most exciting word in a little child's world. As long as you mention the word fun, they'll probably come running to you begging to find out where is the fun. Don't you agree? That's why I try to incorporate fun when I am teaching Lil' C. I find that when I do that, she learns so much faster. This way of teaching is also new to me, so it's been a learning experience for me too. As I learned it, I will try to share some of what I've learned.

This is what we did when we were learning about colors. This will work very well either in a group or private setting. I actually learned this in a library storytime.

1. Get some basic color swatches. You can either DIY or like me, get some paint color samples from the hardware store : )

2. Print a cute clipart like a mouse, cat, Elmo or even a pic of your child's favorite stuffed toy.

3. Stick the color swatches on a poster board & hide Elmo behind one of the colors.

4. Then tell your child that Elmo's playing hide & seek with him/her & ask your child to find Elmo by naming the color. Your child will probably be tempted to flip over all the color swatches to find Elmo but try to discourage them from doing it. Try to encourage them to yell out the color & you'll flip it over. That way, they will be more motivated to learn colors. Of course, once your child finds Elmo, give the biggest cheer ever!!!

Tag: 8 random facts about me

Got double tagged by Cairo's mommy & The Imperfect Mom for this. Actually I did a 7 random things about me tag about 2 weeks ago. Hopefully, I can still come out with 8 more. If you are interested, here goes....

1. I'm a procrastinator! That explains all the sudden influx of tags..hehe... Sorry hor!

2. I am camera-obsessed. I bring my camera everywhere I go. This only happen post-baby. I guess I'm afraid I'll miss some kodak moments. Since I'm with her 24/7, I have tons of Lil' C's photos. Now I have a headache 'cos I haven't figure out a way to organize them!! Any tips??

3. I took my first solo flight to US at the age of 17. Apparently my family forgot to inform me that there are 4 different time zones in US 'cos I was so happily shopping in the airport shops during transit that I almost missed my connecting flights.

4. I love chocolates!!

5. For my elementary and secondary education, I was educated in Chinese, Malay and English-medium schools. Talk about a confused kid!! hehe...

6. I'm more of an introvert. Can you tell? Maybe it's due to my nomadic lifestyle? (See here) I dunno.

Hmm... I'm kinda stuck right now. How about if I add 2 random facts about my gal instead?? :P

7. Her favorite food is sweet potato fries. Whenever I make those, she can eat the whole potato!

8. She has accumulated a lot of frequent flier points for a 31 month old. She's been to Malaysia twice and flown cross country from East Coast US to the West Coast US 3 times

Ok, that's it of boring ole' me. Gonna pass this on to my new friends:

1. Everyday Healy
2. Grandmother Stories
3. Gogo Snoopy

Tag: A *Love* Link

Thanks to Mummy to Qiqi at De'Moments for this tag. Everytime I visit her blog and see her beautiful scrapbooking, my hands start to itch and I want to start scrapbooking again. Actually I started scrapping when my gal was born but somehow got sidetracked. Now Lil' C is 31 months and I'm still stuck on page 2!!! Hopefully, someday I will get over this lazy streak & start again!!

1. Write a short paragraph at the beginning of your post and link back to the blog that put you on the list in the paragraph. This isn’t a suggestion. You need to break up the duplicate content. Someone took the time to add you so the least you can do is give them an extra link back.

2. Copy the list of originals below COMPLETELY and add it to your blog. If you would like a different keyword for your blog then change it when you do your post and it should pass to most blogs with that keyword.

3. Take the adds from the blog that added you and place them in the “Originals” list.

4. Add at least 1 new blog that you KNOW is using the DO FOLLOW plugin to the list in the “My Adds” section. (Add no more than 5!) Let the people you’ve added know, so that they can keep the list going!

Tag: My 7 Vanity Sense Facts

It's tag catch-up week!! Being the great procrastinator that I am, I am so overdue on so many tags. But better late than never, right?? : p

First up is the vanity tag. Thanks to Mommibee for this tag. For this tag, I had to take the quiz at Vanity Quiz and here's my result.

You Are 21% Vain

Okay, so you're slightly vain from time to time, but you're not superficial at all.
You are realistic. You know that looks matter. You just try to make them matter less.

Hmm... no surprises at all. I actually thought I would end up with 5%! Maybe I am just a little teeny weeny bit vain. Now I have to list my 7 Vanity Sense Facts.

1. I have very thick hair so I have to use lots of conditioner otherwise my hair will be all frizzy & all tangled up.
2. When I was back in KL, I used to go to the spa for facials but now I only do DIY mask once in a while.
3. I used to dye my hair but haven't done that in a long time.
4. The only thing I carry around with me is my lip gloss.
5. I used to use Lancome products - facewash, scrub, toner and moisturiser but now I only use Lancome moisturiser. I still wash my face though but with Neutrogena instead. Cheaper mah!!
6. With the dry weather here, I have to use body lotion everyday otherwise the skin is so dry.
7. I give up!! Can't think of anymore facts : p

Phew, that was a hard one! Now looking at what I've written, I think I need some pampering!! I really miss all those salon & spa sessions in Malaysia.

Now I would like to pass this tag to these beautiful ladies:

Mummy to Qiqi
Giddy Tigers
Mom of Cairo
